"The risk of taking an innocent life should negate the use of capital punishment." Writes Ralph McCloud in the National Catholic Reporter article published today.

Recalling Missouri's September 24th execution of Marcellus Williams "despite the mishandling of important DNA evidence by the state and calls to overturn the conviction by the original prosecutor," McCloud points to the permanence and irreversibility of execution.

The article, "After 200th death row exoneration, it's time to end death penalty," highlights the recent milestone of reaching 200 exonerations from death row the United States, "There are simply too many ways a death penalty case can go awry, and even when the flaws are glaring, courts are often loath to redress them."

In his article, McCloud's conclusion is clear, "the only way to ensure that this country doesn't execute any more innocent people is to end the death penalty once and for all," and, he asserts, "by doing so, we can keep society safe while honoring the humanity of every person and advancing forms of justice that enable healing and redemption."
